I think it’s because it’s difficult to even class it as crossdressing or drag. There’s a reason a lot of queer people have anime profile pictures online – it’s a world that’s simultaneously both dismissive and an exaggeration of gender.Ĭrossdressing cartoon characters have always massaged something in my brain and touched on something deeply silly. But while the surge in mainstream drag, packaged under inclusivity, diversity and “we’re all born naked and the rest is drag”, has undoubtedly been a net positive for gender non-conforming people, it’s worth remembering that cartoons got there first.įrom The Lion King ’s Timon doing the hula-hula to Pleakley from Lilo and Stitch ’s iconic fuck-ass bob, animation has always worked as a lawless space, where gender is as malleable and nonsensical as how so many queer and gender non-conforming people see it. Seeing characters experiment with their gender identity, something that can be fundamentally affirming for queer people, has become more common in recent years.

For many, cartoons have always served as an early introduction to gender variance – and no one has batted an eyelid. They wouldn’t think that the man was turning into something ‘inappropriate’.” Amid the recent tidal wave of bigotry against queer people, it’s both depressing and fascinating that right-wingers have attacked drag in the name of protecting children, when every single western child has consumed hours upon hours of Bugs Bunny in a dress and red lip.

“At the time, if a man dressed up like a woman, there’s no transvestite,” he said. Jones discussed the character’s lifelong penchant for crossdressing in a radio interview in 1996 with KLOS. But why does Bugs do it? Because, according to his co-creator Chuck Jones, he just likes it. As is tradition, after Bugs’ dress rips, exposing his suspiciously-shaped tail and furry legs, the gentleman is so horrified he throws himself into the nearest river. Taken from 1949 short Mississippi Hare, this is just one instance of Bugs, giggly and flirtatious, donning a gown and wig to seduce male characters for quite literally no reason. Francine surprises him by giving him back his award for the very hard work he put into trying to impress her.“I was just terribly, terribly frightened and you’re so big and so strong,” purrs a fully dragged up Bugs Bunny to a kindly gentleman, moments after he defends Bugs’ honour. As Roger tells the entire truth about having to hire and train the actors in a process that took weeks to prepare, he mopes about having failed to impress Francine again. Roger tries to set up a chase by the "natives" that goes badly and Francine accidentally stabs and kills Cuba Gooding, Jr., one of the actors, with a stalagmite. Francine refuses to leave and the actors start getting tired. Roger is able to communicate with them and Francine is impressed, but the entire thing turns out to be a ruse for Francine's benefit and the natives are actors hired by Roger. When the dig site collapses into a sink hole, they are dropped into a cave where they find what appears to be a primitive culture living undiscovered. Roger decides to put his archeology degree to use and goes on a dig with Francine. Francine becomes upset at having been duped by Roger and takes back her personal award and gives it to Steve which upsets Roger and he vows to do something for real to make her proud. As Francine starts to drive him home, Roger admits that he faked the training and then has her stop the car where he finishes the marathon in first place.

Roger starts off on the marathon but collapses just feet from the starting line. After weeks of training, Francine gives Roger an award of her own for his hard work. Roger vows to impress them by running a marathon and Francine pledges to help him train. Back home, the rest of the family admits that since he faked the credits to graduate, there was no point in going, as he had purchased or faked most of his awards including an Oscar from Cuba Gooding, Jr. When Roger gets a diploma for archeology in his persona of Twill Ongenbone from Georgetown University, Francine is the only family member to show up for the graduation.
